The stages

What happens, and who does what

Each stage sets out four things so there is no ambiguity about responsibility at any point.

  1. Submit Electrical Enquiry

    Client provides
    Contact details, the property postcode, whether the enquiry is domestic or commercial, and a description of what is needed.
    Gridline reviews
    Whether the enquiry is understood well enough to progress, and which service route it belongs to.
    May need confirmation
    Anything ambiguous in the description, and whether further detail is needed before a site visit is worthwhile.
    Why it matters
    A clear starting point avoids a sequence of clarifying messages and gets to a useful answer faster.
  2. Share Property & Electrical Requirements

    Client provides
    Property type, how it is used and occupied, the requirement in more detail, and any equipment already chosen.
    Gridline reviews
    How the requirement interacts with the property — routes, positions, distribution and likely constraints.
    May need confirmation
    Equipment specifications, who is supplying what, and whether the requirement is fixed or still being decided.
    Why it matters
    Most scope changes originate here. Detail at this stage is the cheapest detail in the whole project.
  3. Review Existing Installation, Access & Safety Considerations

    Client provides
    Access arrangements, information about the existing installation, known faults, and any documentation held.
    Gridline reviews
    The existing wiring, distribution arrangement, condition, viable routes, isolation points and safe working requirements.
    May need confirmation
    Anything that cannot be established without opening up, and whether further investigation is required first.
    Why it matters
    This is the stage that turns assumptions into observations, and it determines whether the intended approach is actually workable.
  4. Confirm Scope, Materials, Testing & Requirements

    Client provides
    Decisions on positions, accessories, fittings, finishes and anything being supplied by the client.
    Gridline reviews
    Circuit arrangement, materials, protective devices, testing appropriate to the work and documentation expected.
    May need confirmation
    Product availability and lead times, third-party requirements, and any items outside the electrical scope.
    Why it matters
    Scope agreed in writing is what protects both sides when the work meets the building.
  5. Agree Quotation & Project Timing

    Client provides
    Acceptance of the scope and quotation, plus the dates and access windows that work for the property.
    Gridline reviews
    Programme, sequencing, dependencies on other trades, and any phasing required around occupancy or trading.
    May need confirmation
    Dependencies outside Gridline’s control, and what happens if they move.
    Why it matters
    Dates that acknowledge their dependencies hold up better than dates that ignore them.
  6. Complete Electrical Work

    Client provides
    Agreed access, a point of contact on site, and prompt decisions where something needs confirming.
    Gridline reviews
    The work against the agreed arrangement, plus anything discovered during installation that affects it.
    May need confirmation
    Variations arising from hidden conditions, and approval before any additional work is carried out.
    Why it matters
    Raising variations rather than absorbing them keeps cost, scope and programme visible throughout.
  7. Test, Review, Document & Handover Where Applicable

    Client provides
    Access for testing, and confirmation of who should receive documentation.
    Gridline reviews
    Inspection and testing appropriate to the work, results, outstanding items and recommended follow-up.
    May need confirmation
    Any items identified for remedial attention, and whether they form a further piece of work.
    Why it matters
    Handover is what the next person to work on the installation depends on — including you, later.

Variables

Eleven things that affect scope, cost and programme

These are stated openly because they shape almost every electrical project, and pretending otherwise only defers the conversation.

    When areas are available, who provides entry, and whether occupied rooms can be worked in.

    Isolation

    What has to be switched off, for how long, and what must remain energised throughout.

    Occupants

    People living or working in the property while electrical work is carried out around them.

    Commercial operating hours

    Trading patterns that dictate when work can happen, and whether out-of-hours attendance applies.

    Product availability

    Lead times on accessories, fittings, controls and distribution equipment at the time of ordering.

  • V6

    Existing installation

    Condition, arrangement and previous work, all of which affect what can be connected and how.

  • V7

    Hidden faults

    Conditions only discoverable once work has started, which may change scope or sequence.

    Third-party requirements

    Approvals, notifications, network involvement, building control or landlord consent.

  • V9

    Testing

    Verification appropriate to the work, and the time and access it requires.

    Certification & documentation

    What is recorded, who receives it, and what remains outstanding at handover.

    Schedule limitations

    Dependencies on other trades, preceding works and dates already committed elsewhere.

The Gridline Electrical Framework

A defined route from first enquiry to handover

Every project follows the same seven stages. The detail changes with the property and the work; the sequence does not.

  1. ST-01

    Assess

    Understand the property, the existing installation and what the electrical requirement actually is before anything is priced or programmed.

    What gets reviewed
    Property type, age and use, existing wiring and accessories, distribution arrangement, known faults, access, occupancy and any previous electrical work.
    Client role
    Describe the property, the requirement, anything already known about the installation, and any documentation held.
    Why it matters
    Scope written from assumptions is the single most common cause of mid-project change. Assessment replaces assumptions with observations.
  2. ST-02

    Plan

    Translate the requirement into a defined electrical scope with circuit arrangement, routes, accessories and sequencing.

    What gets reviewed
    Circuit arrangement, cable routes and containment, accessory positions, protective devices, equipment requirements, materials and installation sequence.
    Client role
    Confirm positions, finishes, equipment to be supplied, decorating expectations and any dates the work must sit around.
    Why it matters
    A planned route reduces disruption, avoids unnecessary chasing and lifting, and makes the installation easier to extend later.
  3. ST-03

    Isolate

    Establish safe working conditions before any work on the installation begins.

    What gets reviewed
    Points of isolation, circuits affected, equipment that must stay energised, occupants and users on site, and the safe working arrangement for the day.
    Client role
    Confirm who is on site, which equipment cannot lose supply, and any operational or trading constraints.
    Why it matters
    Isolation protects everyone on site and prevents damage to equipment and data that depends on continuity of supply.
  4. ST-04

    Install

    Carry out the agreed electrical work to the planned arrangement.

    What gets reviewed
    Cable installation, containment, accessory and fitting installation, connections, distribution work and coordination with other trades on site.
    Client role
    Maintain agreed access, flag anything that changes on site, and confirm any variation before it is carried out.
    Why it matters
    Controlled installation keeps quality, safety and programme aligned, and keeps variations visible rather than absorbed silently.
  5. ST-05

    Test

    Verify the work through appropriate inspection and testing for the type of work carried out.

    What gets reviewed
    Inspection and testing appropriate to the work, results recorded, and any issues identified during verification.
    Client role
    Allow access for testing and accept that findings may identify pre-existing conditions elsewhere in the installation.
    Why it matters
    Testing is how electrical work is verified rather than assumed. Results are established at this point, not promised beforehand.
  6. ST-06

    Document

    Record what was installed, what was tested and what remains outstanding.

    What gets reviewed
    Documentation appropriate to the work and to client requirements, including anything identified for follow-up or remedial attention.
    Client role
    Confirm who the documentation is for — owner, landlord, managing agent, main contractor or incoming tenant.
    Why it matters
    Documentation is what the next person to work on the installation relies on, and what landlords and managing agents are usually asked for.
  7. ST-07

    Support

    Hand over clearly and remain available for follow-up questions, further stages or additional work.

    What gets reviewed
    Handover of the completed work, explanation of what was installed, outstanding items, and any recommended follow-up.
    Client role
    Raise questions after handover and confirm any further phases or additional requirements.
    Why it matters
    Most electrical work is one stage in a longer relationship with a property. Clear handover makes the next stage straightforward.

Planning

Why the order is fixed even when the work is small

A single additional circuit and a full commercial fit-out follow the same sequence; the difference is how much time each stage takes. Keeping the order consistent is what makes small work predictable and large work manageable.

Electrical services are subject to site conditions, access, existing wiring, load requirements, product availability, applicable regulations, and agreed terms.
